Unusual Samples for DNA Testing
DNA testing can be performed using any biological fluid, since DNA is the same in every cell of our body. The most common samples are blood and saliva. However, there are other sources from which DNA can be obtained, which we refer to as “unusual” samples. The following samples can provide DNA suitable for processing. IMPORTANT: If the sample contains a mixture from two or more people, a known reference sample is required to rule out the extra profile.
SEMEN

Use a condom, or you can collect the semen with some cotton swabs and place them in a container.

TOOTHBRUSH

At least 3 months of exclusive use by the person.

NAILS
Fingernail or toenail trimming—5–10 trims specific to that person.
HAIR
Hair plucked from the head; ensure that the root is intact (10–12 hairs) from the individual. Optional: a personal hairbrush (restrictions apply).
GARMENTS WITH FLUIDS
Clothing with stains of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, etc. Bandages, gauze, or paper napkins are acceptable. It is recommended that you have a reference sample.
EARWAX
Ear swabs with a matchstick-shaped tip, 2–3 swabs.
MUCUS OR NASAL SECRETIONS
Collected on a cloth or paper napkin.
RAKE
The disposable razor is shipped either as a whole unit or with just the blades. For personal use only.
UMBILICAL CORD
The umbilical cord must be dry and in good condition. A reference sample from the mother is required.
CIGAR BUTT
2–4 cigarette butts belonging exclusively to the individual (containing oral mucosa/saliva).
BABY PACIFIER
The pacifier contains a large amount of DNA. It is recommended that it be used exclusively by the baby and not shared with siblings.
PARAFFIN FABRIC
Tissue specimen embedded in a paraffin block. Provided by the Pathology Department.
PAD / TAMPON
They can be an excellent source of DNA. They are refrigerated as soon as they are collected and taken to the laboratory as soon as possible.
BONE REMAINS
Forensic evidence provided by specialists. Femur, temporal bone, foot bones, clavicle, rib, molars, etc.
URINE
Urine contains DNA from epithelial cells of the bladder and urethra. In women, some vaginal cells may also be present.

*DNA extraction from unusual samples incurs an additional cost separate from the cost of the requested test. Please contact the laboratory for more information.

Feasibility Study

It is not always possible to obtain a good DNA profile from unusual samples. The material obtained may not be of sufficient quantity or quality to perform the analyses; for this reason, the laboratory carries out all necessary quality control procedures before proceeding with the study. If the sample is not viable, you will be notified and asked to provide a new unusual sample.
