Use of DNA Testing for Paternity
WHAT IS DNA?

DNA is found in every cell of our body; it is our blueprint. These strands of DNA contain our genetic information in the form of a code, which determines our individual traits and characteristics. When the two strands of DNA separate, each unit (known as a “base”) forms a very precise template that corresponds to the base of the new channel DNA, so that information is not lost but is duplicated and preserved.

DNA AND PATERNITY TESTS

Every individual has a a unique DNA sequence that is the same in all the body's cells, This would be similar to saying that a person’s DNA is their genetic fingerprint; however, among people who share a family relationship, certain sequences will remain similar. A child inherits DNA from both parents. A paternity test can determine whether an individual is the child’s biological father by comparing samples from:

  • The alleged father's DNA
  • Fetal DNA, or the child's DNA if the child has already been born
  • The DNA of the pregnant woman or the mother, if the child has already been born
WHAT ALTERNATIVES TO PATERNITY TESTS CAN BE USED TO ESTABLISH PARENTAL RELATIONSHIPS?

If we are unable to obtain the aforementioned DNA samples to establish paternity, we can resort to indirect DNA tests, such as:

GRANDPARENTAL TESTS

How to Explain It to a Child A child inherits half of their DNA from one parent and the other half from the other, Therefore, we must find each of those halves of the DNA contained by the two sets of grandparents on each family branch, Therefore, we can find similarities among genetic markers. It is worth noting that this type of study does not distinguish between some of the grandparents' children and others, so it cannot be considered a direct test of paternity or maternity.

TEST OF BROTHERHOOD

Sibling tests compare the genetic profiles of two individuals to assess the likelihood that their matching DNA comes from a common father. Sometimes even siblings—children of the same mother—have doubts about their father’s identity, or such tests are used to determine half-sibling relationships among individuals born to different mothers who suspect they share the same father.

AVUNCULAR TEST

Also known as an aunt/uncle DNA test, it allows the alleged father’s siblings to participate in the DNA test. The aunt/uncle DNA test verifies whether there is a biological relationship between the alleged aunt or uncle and the subject nephew or niece.

This type of test is possible because we inherit genetic material from our biological parents, who in turn, along with their siblings, inherit genetic material from their parents. Our genetic material helps determine our biological relationships.

ANALYSIS PROCESS

Since DNA is found in every cell of our body, cells from the inside of the cheek provide a simple and convenient source for both DNA sampling and analysis. Using swabs received at the laboratory, DNA is isolated to identify specific regions of the chromosomes that vary in length among individuals. A total of 24 of these sites are being analyzed (known as “locus” or “loci” (plural) and a comparison is made among the individuals involved to determine whether there is any family relationship.
