Results of mutations in the ALDOB gene that codes for the enzyme aldolase B, responsible for the metabolism of fructose (sugar commonly present in fruits and vegetables).
It happens in many children. Sometimes the diagnosis is only made until adulthood when there is an aversion to the ingestion of sweets and fruits.
Ingesting foods containing fructose or sucrose like most fruits or vegetables causes abdominal pain, vomiting and hypoglycemia. The continued intake of these foods can lead to irreparable damage to the liver and kidneys.
