expanded our understanding of cancer genetics and contributed to the development of new molecular biology tools.<\/p><p>One such tool is the liquid biopsy, a technique used primarily to detect tumor cells and tumor-derived products in peripheral blood, which has the advantage of being minimally invasive, sensitive, and cost-effective.<\/p><p>Some of the biomarkers released by tumors\u2014either into the peripheral blood or other bodily fluids\u2014are circulating tumor cells\u00a0<strong>(CTCs)<\/strong>, circulating tumor DNA<strong>\u00a0(ctDNA)<\/strong>, extracellular vesicles\u00a0<strong>(EV) (exosomes and microvesicles)<\/strong>\u00a0(Wang et al., 2017).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d929ac2 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"d929ac2\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The\u00a0<strong>circulating tumor cells<\/strong>\u00a0They enter the bloodstream by passing through the wall of a blood vessel and then detach from the tumor, travel to other parts of the body, and form metastases (Lianidou and Pantel, 2019) (Fig. 1). The quantification of circulating tumor cell biomarkers and circulating proteins, including prostate-specific antigen, is used to diagnose cancer in clinical practice.<\/p><p>However, the plasma protein biomarkers currently in use, such as alpha-fetoprotein and carcinoembryonic antigen, have low sensitivity and low positive predictive value, which leads to false-negative results in patients with a low tumor burden (von Bubnoff, 2017).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div data-particle_enable=\"false\" data-particle-mobile-disabled=\"false\" class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3339ff7 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"3339ff7\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;_ha_eqh_enable&quot;:false}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cae7627 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"cae7627\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a7286c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9a7286c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tctDNA\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-09e150b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"09e150b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The\u00a0<strong>ctDNA<\/strong>\u00a0it can be free of primary tumors,\u00a0<strong>CTCs<\/strong>\u00a0or detectable metastases in the blood of cancer patients. This type of DNA originates from apoptotic and necrotic tumor cells that release their DNA fragments into the blood (Fig. 1). Its concentration in serum and blood is significantly higher than in healthy individuals, and this is correlated with the severity of the disease (Kustanovich et al., 2019)<\/p><p>ctDNA has been used as a biomarker in an increasing number of cancer types, including lymphoma, melanoma, GIST, thyroid cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, and lung cancer screening, to detect common mutations, such as\u00a0<strong>BRAF, EGFR, KRAS, PIK3CA, TP53, KIT, PDGFRA, and ESR1<\/strong>\u00a0(Gonzales-Cao et al., 2015).<\/p><p>For this reason, the analysis of\u00a0<strong>ctDNA<\/strong>\u00a0It is useful for ongoing monitoring of tumor alterations due to the high turnover rate of circulating DNA and its ability to rapidly assess alterations in tumor genomics and identify epigenetic changes (Rossi and and proteins secreted by cells and subsequently circulating in the blood (Poulet et al., 2019) (Fig. 1).\u00a0 Both tumor DNA (<strong>ctDNA<\/strong>) as well as free-circulating DNA (<strong>cfADN<\/strong>) are found in exosomes, providing genomic information about cellular mutations in the tumor, and are used for diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic purposes (Jia et al.,
