\n\nOver the past few decades, the concept of\u00a0precision medicine<\/strong>\u00a0has drastically transformed the field of\u00a0medical oncology<\/strong>; the implementation of patient-tailored therapies has improved significantly.\u00a0Liquid Biopsy<\/strong>\u00a0It is a revolutionary technique that opens up previously unexpected possibilities. It consists of the\u00a0detection and isolation of circulating tumor cells, circulating tumor DNA, and exosomes<\/strong>, as a source of genomic information in cancer patients.\nThe identification of\u00a0predictive biomarkers<\/strong>\u00a0Tumor tissue analysis is now essential for optimal patient care, but it faces several biological and technological challenges. A recent study of multiple samples from lung cancer patients demonstrated that there is\u00a0intratumoral heterogeneity<\/strong>\u00a0between different regions within the same tumor\u00a0(spatial heterogeneity)<\/strong>, as well as between the primary tumor and local or distant recurrences in the same patient\u00a0(temporal heterogeneity).<\/strong>\u00a0In addition, other studies have characterized the dynamic changes in tumor characteristics over the course of the disease, and these changes have affected the\u00a0treatment resistance.<\/strong>\u00a0Therefore, inter- and intratumoral heterogeneity poses a fundamental challenge for guiding clinical decision-making in pulmonary oncology, since the\u00a0Tissue biopsies can be inaccurate<\/strong>\u00a0to capture the complete genomic profile of a cancer patient.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

On the other hand, the\u00a0comprehensive genomic information<\/strong>\u00a0Tumor resection is often limited by its accessibility, due to the rate of clinical complications associated with the\u00a0invasive procedures<\/strong>\u00a0necessary for obtaining tissue samples at the time of the initial diagnosis, as well as during the course of treatment for the disease.
In addition to this, another major barrier to biomarker testing is the\u00a0availability of an adequate amount of tissue<\/strong>, due to the multiple tests performed on a single sample and the reduced amount of tissue submitted per patient. Typically,\u00a0In less than 80% of patients with lung cancer in an advanced stage, a small tissue biopsy can be taken,<\/strong>\u00a0which limits the ability to perform additional tests; the remaining patients do not have tissue accessible for a biopsy. Even when tissue can be collected, preservation methods, such as formalin fixation, may result in high levels of\u00a0changes in genetic material<\/strong>\u00a0for molecular testing.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

In light of these\u00a0restrictions on the use of<\/strong>\u00a0tissue biopsies,<\/strong>\u00a0New approaches to studying tumor genetics and tumor dynamics have emerged.
Currently, a\u00a0Liquid biopsy provides an alternative type of sample<\/strong>\u00a0in routine clinical practice when a tumor sample is unavailable, unsuitable, or difficult to obtain. Furthermore, sampling is less invasive for the genomic characterization of ctDNA or CTCs and\u00a0enables repeatable evaluation<\/strong>\u00a0throughout the course of therapy and early identification.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
